Join This Richmond Woman Racing to End Homelessness

Call her a woman on a mission. Alexis Pickins, 22, is a Richmond native and the first and only runner to register for the 26th Annual GRIP Harmony Walk & 5K Run to End Homelessness Presented by Chevron so far.

On Saturday, October 20, Pickens will run 3.1 miles starting and ending at the Richmond Civic Center Plaza to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness in West Contra Costa County and raise funds in support of the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program’s Family Housing Emergency Shelter.

Pickens was inspired to run after learning that more than 1,311 children and teens are homeless and hungry in Contra Costa County, with more than 58% of cases in West County.

“I know a lot of kids in Richmond are hungry. Not knowing where you are going to find your next meal is awful. So, I think it’s important to end this. I have friends that have been homeless and did not know where they would stay from night to night, so I see this as an opportunity to help make a change. I want to change someone’s situation in the future,” Pickins said.
