Richmond Community Foundation (RCF) would like to invite you to participate in its 8th Annual Northern California Summit on Children and Youth. Last year, RCF partnered for the first time with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to present the Summit, Building the Next Generation Workforce, which featured a career fair for students and teachers, the ideal way to incorporate participation from the target population, underserved youth and students of color.

The transition of our communities from economies focused on manufacturing to economies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields has changed how we build our next generation workforce.  The benefits of this changing economy have not been evenly distributed across labor markets and the disparity has affected urban, minority communities disproportionately.  Ending this disparity will take an approach that:

  • Creates enthusiasm for STEM programs among younger students;
  • Encourages passion among youth to harness the power of STEM;
  • Promotes innovative instruction; and Furthers the opportunities for partnerships between private sector companies and institutions of higher learning.

Last year’s Summit included inspiring speakers and presentations from programs throughout the Bay Area, including Jennifer Stetson (she was so impactful we plan to invite her to speak again this year!) as well as roundtable discussions that tackled challenges and opportunities.  These roundtables provided recommendations and strategies to ensure that our communities are ready to fill the employment opportunities available in our region in coming years, such as health care, ICT, biotech and many other vocations. In addition to presenting workforce programs that actively train and develop young people for careers, the Summit explored academic, vocational, training and mentoring programs targeting underserved youth, and community college students.  Last year’s summit provided an excellent foundation on which to continue to build collaborative and coordinated programs and strategies that will ensure our community’s most underserved have access to training and jobs in the future.
This year, RCF is planning to continue the theme of Building the Next Generation Workforce, and will once again partner with the WCCUSD on developing a Summit that will incorporate a college and career fair, simultaneously taking place with a convening of key stakeholders, community leaders, educators, parents and government officials to ensure that programs and services are accessible to youth in our communities. The event is scheduled for May 10,2017 and will take place at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium. We are seeking your support for this critical event that has significant regional implications.
