1. Why are you running for this office? What do you want to accomplish as a city council member?

Hello. My name is Eleanor Thompson. I am running for Richmond City Council District 1, because I want to make a greater difference in my community. I have lived in Richmond over 50 years. I have lived in District 1 for over 30 years. I raised my children in District 1. In 1991, I founded Social Progress Inc., a non-profit organization that serves District 1 youth. I also advocated for the redevelopment of Nevin Street Park. I also served as president of the Iron Triangle Neighborhood Council. As a member of the city council, I will continue my work on behalf of community.

2. If elected, what issues will you be focusing on, and what will be your top priorities?

My top priorities are economic development, homelessness, and safety for all.

3. What does economic development mean to you?

Economic development is a means to improve our community. We need to create more jobs that pay a living wage and benefits for our residents. We also need to attract other investments, including affordable housing construction, retail, restaurants, hospitality, and a hospital. Richmond is a jewel. We just have to polish it a little.

4. How will you work with the business community if elected?

I want to support our small, medium, and large businesses. I support loans for small businesses. I support keeping business taxes reasonable. I support cutting unnecessary red tape. I also support helping residents, including youth, start their own businesses. I hope to partner with the chamber of commerce on some of these initiatives.

5. What does job retention mean to you?

Job retention means keeping as many jobs as possible in our city that pay a living wage and benefits, so our families can afford to continue living here.
